At Little Learners Education we encourage a love of reading through a wide range of high quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry.  We use a synthetic phonics scheme to teach our pupils the skills to become enthusiastic, fluent and confident readers and writers.

Our pupils are regularly assessed, to ensure that we are meeting their individual needs.

The synthetic phonics scheme promotes the teaching of phonics through a structured and uniform approach with our pupils participating 100% in the learning process.  It ensures that our pupils are taught the sounds and corresponding graphemes needed to be successful for reading and writing.  Our pupils apply their learning of new sounds to read and write both 'real' and 'nonsense' words, in preparation for National Phonics Screening Tests, beginning in Year 1.


How can you help your child if they are persistently struggling to remember a tricky spelling?  The answer could lie in mnemonic memory aids.  Little Learners Education have been working on developing a mnemonic spelling method to support pupils learn the high frequency and common exception words to match new National Curriculum spelling expectations.  The trial in our group tuition sessions has achieved some astonishingly positive results.


We tailor bespoke reading plans to match the needs of our learners. Our pupils explore a wide variety of genres, both fiction and non-fiction which allows them to access, input ideas and understand what they are reading.  They are given opportunities to speculate on the tone and purpose of the texts they explore, as well as to consider both the themes and audience.  We provide comprehension activities to ensure children understand what they have read.


We have developed our own handwriting development program. This includes assessment of fine motor skills and the impact on pencil grasp development, interactive handwriting warm up activities, explicit teaching of cursive letter style matched to National Curriculum expectations and handwriting practice linked to specific year group spellings.  We also offer a range of tripod style pens, pencils and pencil grippers for our pupils to try out to support correct and comfortable pencil grip.


Our approach to writing is to engage all of our pupils and develop their love of writing.  We provide them with the necessary support to develop skills and techniques needed to nurture confident and independent writers.

We provide lots of exciting opportunities for writing and whenever possible, outcomes are linked to the topic studied in their own class at school.  We ensure our pupils have a clear purpose for writing and use a variety of hooks for this.

SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)

We teach explicit grammar lessons within our sessions to meet National Curriculum expectations for SPaG

(Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation).  We ensure grammatical techniques are taught in a creative way, within a context linked to a topic or child's interests.
